Hauger closes in on F3 title after dominant Zandvoort victory
Starting from pole position, Hauger maintained the lead into Turn 1 ahead of Trident’s David Schumacher.
Hauger’s superior pace was apparent immediately as he managed to break DRS to Schumacher behind as Victor Martins started to apply intense pressure.
With Hauger running several seconds clear out front, the focus was on the battle for second between Martins and Schumacher.
The pair came to blows three laps from the end as Martins tried an aggressive lunge into the banked Turn 3 corner, hitting Schumacher and sending him into the barriers.
The tangle allowed Clement Novalak to move into second, while Martins was handed a 10-second time penalty for his role in the incident, handing Aleksandr Smolyar the final spot on the rostrum.
With Hauger taking the victory, he has extended his lead to 43 points going into the Russia finale over Jack Doohan, who finished fourth.
With a maximum of 65 points available at each race weekend, it’s in Hauger’s hands going to Sochi.
Outside of the top four was Caio Collet, Logan Sargeant and Jak Crawford.
Collet spent much of the first half of the race behind Crawford, who was complaining about his fitness levels in the car.
The Brazilian capitalised on Lap 12, making the use of DRS into Turn 1 to overtake the Red Bull junior.
On Lap 18, a lock-up for Crawford allowed Sargeant to get ahead of his fellow countryman for seventh.
Frederik Vesti could only finish eighth ahead of Arthur Leclerc, while Martins' 10-second time penalty dropped him to tenth.
