Dennis takes second Formula E victory of 2021 at London E-Prix
Starting from second on the grid, Dennis sat behind Mahindra’s Alex Lynn in the early laps. Dennis decided to take his first attack mode with Lynn but on the second occasion, he did not, which proved decisive.
Dennis took the lead as Lynn took his second attack mode and managed to maintain the lead when he ultimately took his second boost of power. From then on, the BMW Andretti driver dominated proceedings in London to win by over five seconds.
Lynn struggled for pace in the closing laps and was overtaken by Nyck de Vries into Turn 10, making the most of fanboost. Turn 10 was de Vries’ favourite overtaking zone as he overtook Sebastien Buemi into the same corner earlier in the E-Prix.
Starting from ninth on the grid, de Vries will be delighted with second - his first points since Puebla race one. Lynn held onto third place to secure his first podium since the second Valencia round.
Sebastien Buemi finished fourth for Nissan e.dams, making it his best result of the season to date. Andre Lotterer was fifth but was left to rue missing the attack zone when he tried to take it in the first phase of the race.
Next up was the Audi duo of Rene Rast and Lucas di Grassi. Di Grassi got through into Turn 10 with the use of team orders but the Brazilian couldn’t find a way past Lotterer so let Rast back through into Turn 1 on the final lap.
Stoffel Vandoorne enjoyed a decent recovery in the second Mercedes to finish eighth, with Antonio Felix da Costa and Oliver Rowland completing the top 10 in London. Norman Nato was on course to finish tenth but ran out of power on the final lap, dropping to 21st.
It was a disastrous day for championship leader Sam Bird who retired on the opening lap after contact. It was a similar story for Alexander Sims in the second Mahindra as his race ended on Lap 1.
Formula E returns to London tomorrow for a second E-Prix. Bird leads the standings on 81 points, two clear of fellow Brit Dennis.
