Ferrari in 2024

Ferrari will be hoping to get back on track after taking a step back in 2023. It’s easy to forget that Ferrari were the team to beat at the start of the ‘ground effect’ era in 2022. However, a change in design philosophy in a bid to take on Red Bull, who often had a significant straight-line speed advantage, didn’t pay off. Ferrari retained their one-lap speed, but their race pace and tyre degradation proved to be a major weakness.

Regardless, it was Ferrari who claimed the only non-Red Bull win of the year as Carlos Sainz came out on top at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc’s best work came in the final seven rounds, narrowly missing out on the win in Las Vegas.

Ferrari have retained Leclerc and Sainz, giving them an impressive driver pairing. However, it’s down to the team to give their drivers the tools to get close to Max Verstappen in 2024.

Ferrari's F1 history

Ferrari have competed in every round of the F1 world championship stretching back to 1950. They are the most successful F1 constructor with 31 titles in total - 15 drivers' and 16 constructors'.

Their first taste of success came in 1952, taking the title with Alberto Ascari. This was followed up in 1953 with another title triumph for Ascari. Ferrari’s title wins continued in the 1950s and 1960s. Niki Lauda ended their win drought by winning the 1975 title, 11 years on from their last victorious season in terms of the drivers’ championship.

The 1980s and 1990s were dominated by Williams and McLaren, meaning it wasn’t until 1999 when Ferrari tasted title success, taking the constructors’ championship. Michael Schumacher won Ferrari’s first drivers’ championship since 1979 at the turn of the century. From that point on, Ferrari were F1’s dominant force with four straight title wins.

Schumacher was dethroned by Fernando Alonso in 2005, and was then narrowly beaten by the Spaniard in his final year with the team. Kimi Raikkonen put Ferrari back on top in 2007, defeating Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. In 2024, Raikkonen is still Ferrari’s most recent champion. Since then, a number of drivers have gone close. Felipe Massa in 2008, Alonso in 2010 and 2012, while Vettel had chances in 2017 and 2018.
